Frequently Asked Questions

We often get asked many questions about our solar panel installations and how it works, so we have prepared a few FAQs below.

Most solar systems can be installed within a few days, which includes the electrical setup installed by an MCS Certified electrician.

For standard domestic roof-mounted solar panels alone, no — they’re usually classed as permitted development. However. if we also replace your roof, we need to notify Building Control but this is something our experts at ROSE ROOFING can handle on your behalf, being your direct liaison with the local authority.

There are some important exceptions where permission may be required:
– Listed property
– Property is in a conservation area, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or World Heritage Site
– Solar panels are more than 200mm from the roof surface
– If the solar installation would significantly alter the building’s appearance

South-facing roofs are ideal, but east- and west-facing roofs still perform well. When our team at ROSE ROOFING come to visit the property, we will advise you on your expected output.

Very little. Keeping the panels clean and clear of debris is usually enough to keep them efficient. If you want, you can arrange for periodical inspections although it is not a requirement.

Most panels are designed to last 25–30 years, and many continue generating electricity even beyond that. Yor chosen solar panel manufacturer should provide you with a warranty directly.

Most manufacturers offer 25-year performance warranties, meaning panels should still produce around 80–85% of their original output after 25 years. While energy production slowly decreases over time, the panels themselves usually continue working well beyond the warranty period.

Other system components, such as inverters, usually have a shorter lifespan (around 10–15 years) and may need replacing sooner. With proper installation and basic maintenance, solar panels can provide reliable, long-term energy for decades.

Yes. Solar panels produce electricity all year round even on cold or cloudy days. While output is generally higher in summer, they still generate power during the winter months which can offset electric heating costs.

Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not heat, so colder temperatures can actually help them operate more efficiently. While shorter days and increased cloud cover mean they produce less energy than in summer, they still generate power throughout winter months.

Modern solar systems are designed to perform well in UK conditions, and when combined with battery storage, they can help maximise the energy you use year-round.

If your system produces more power than you use, the excess can often be fed back to the grid, depending on your electricity supplier and export arrangements. Alternatively, you can choose to add battery storage to your system, allowing you to store surplus energy for use later, such as at night or during higher-demand periods, giving you even greater independence from the grid.
